Southbury has a wonderful location being on Lake Zoar. Lake Zoar is ten mile long manmade lake that was created by the First Light Power Company in 1919. Southbury is not the only town to be on the lake, Monroe, Oxford, and Newtown also share Zoar. On Scout Road in Southbury is where you will find the boat launch, which also has parking for your trailers and cars. The three other locations to launch your boat are Monroe boat ramp, Newtown Eichler’s Cove, and Oxford’s Jackson Cove. Most boats are welcome and all canoes or kayaks are welcome. Remember 45 mph during the day and 25 mph after sunset are the speed limits on the lake. You can enjoy all your marine activities on Lake Zoar with little to worry about, because they have their own authorities.
The Lake Zoar Authorities are there to make sure everyone enjoys their activities and maintain safety. If you are a fisher then Lake Zoar is a good place to fish. The most common fish caught here is the small mouth bass, and has been rated safe to eat once a month. There are fishing tournaments that are held on Lake Zoar every year, though they are not open to the public it is a sight to see. Local beaches that are open to the public are great day trips to enjoy a hot summer day sun tanning and swimming. Some the most popular activities on the lake are tubing, water skiing, and jet skiing. For those that don’t know tubing is when you are on an inflatable tube, similar to those used in sledding, and you are pulled by a boat. This is a lot of fun especially for the older children that want to do something exciting with friends. When you need to take a break on the water just pull over to one of the many sand bars to enjoy a meal or just relax in some shade on your own part time private island.
